James Eagan Layne: help write the history

The wreck, which lies in Whitsand Bay, has been visited by sport divers since the 1950s. It is one of the best known dive sites off the South Coast.

The Liberty 70 Project is being running by the combined team of ProMare (Promoting Marine Research and Exploration) and the Nautical Archaeology Society.

They plan a book, a dedicated website and, during the anniversary year, celebratory events.

The aim is to document all that can be learned about the ship – its construction, war transport work before it was torpedoed with no casualties, wrecking, salvage and, of course, long stint as diving attraction and artificial reef.

The researchers want to hear from anyone who can contribute factual information, anecdotes or photographs to be considered for inclusion in the book.
