The fun-filled day featured a host of events for divers and their families. Some divers drank a toast to the royal couple – at a depth of some 20m.
The divers descended together before sipping home-prepared cocktails – non-alcoholic, naturally.
When the bottle tops were removed, surrounding water pressure ensured that the cocktail stayed in place while the diver got bottle to mouth.
Ashore, a large TV screen allowed visitors to follow the event in London.
The Gildenburgh celebration was apt, given the royals’ close association with diving.
Prince Philip was the British Sub-Aqua Club’s first president, while Prince Charles is President of the club today and dived on the Mary Rose before its salvage in 1982.
Princes William and Harry have also learned to dive.
William dived on the Great Barrier Reef during his recent visit to Australia and has hinted that he may well return there with his new bride to honeymoon – including, naturally, some more reef diving.
