Shark gives aquarists the slip

Staff think that, some time ago, a curator must have placed a small example in the tank without noting it.  

It was “just feasible” that the shark could have remained hidden, possibly for years, within the rocky crevices of the large, half-million-litre tank, said Martin Sutcliffe, Senior Aquarist.

It might have taken regular refuge to get away from larger sharks in the tank.

The first of two 4in eggs was found by maintenance divers in late April, the second in mid-May.

Their appearance suggests that the female from which they came has reached maturity.

The hunt is on to locate her so that she can be moved to a tank in which she can be mated.

Visitors are being asked to keep their eyes peeled and report suspected sightings to staff.
