King set his latest national men’s record by descending to 73m in freediving’s Free Immersion category, where the diver pulls down and back up a line.
The dive, officiated by the sport’s governing body AIDA, beat by just one metre the record of Mike Board, who had held it for only a month.
The world men’s record stands at 121m, held by William Trubridge of New Zealand.
King also holds the national men’s record of 91m in Constant Weight, where the diver descends and ascends by fin power, carrying any chosen weight throughout.
Austrian Herbert Nitsch holds the world men’s record at 124m.
In addition, King is the British men’s record holder in Dynamic Apnea with a distance of 226m, finned submerged in a pool.
The world men’s record is held by New Zealander Dave Mullins at 265m.
In all, King has held eight national records at various times. His Coupe des Calanques dive is, however, his first in Free Immersion.
King will represent Britain at September’s freediving world championships in Greece.
