Scapa Flow Dive Guide Scapa Flow mapped out
One of the things I always look for in a guide-book is a decent map. I like to know where a dive is as well as what it's like and how to dive it. In Scapa Flow Dive Guide I am not disappointed, as there are plenty of maps - overall maps showing the general layout of Scapa Flow, and detailed maps for each group of wrecks. Repeating the relevant maps at key points in the text saves having to shuffle pages backwards and forwards. Together with all the expected guide information there are some nice sonar images from the Scapa Map project, though not the fantastic 3D images seen in January's DIVER. A pilgrimage to Scapa Flow doesn't stop with the German fleet. Divers are becoming more and more interested in other wrecks, such as the blockships. The Scapa Flow Dive Guide includes full and up-to-date information on all these. There are even maps showing how the wrecks in Burra Sound have shifted over the years. On the minus side, some of the text reads more like a first draft than a final edit. I found myself having to read some sections several times to work out which of the lesser-known wrecks were actually diveable or worth diving. There are so many diving guides to Scapa Flow that I can't say if this is the best. But it is attractively laid out and, at the time of writing, the most up-to-date. John Liddiard
