Fiji's Wild Beauty Multiplicated beauty
If you live in a place that's good for diving and dive every day, you're bound to end up with a large collection of pictures. Well-meaning friends will tell you that they should be in a book, and that's how a lot of books of underwater photographs get born. Achim Nimmerfroh lives in Fiji. He has taken a lot of pictures, and Fiji's Wild Beauty is the result. Unfortunately, he was indecisive when it came to choosing which pictures to include, and made the fatal mistake of not only using the best one of a series of shots but, in many cases, the pictures he took both moments before and after as well. A single good picture tells a story but several of the same subjects simply devalue what you see. He should have stuck to a volume half the size and been more selective, leaving us gagging for more. Instead of which, he has included more than 750 images. If you prefer to treat it as a guide to marine life in Fijian waters, it's very useful, and there's a lot of information alongside the pictures. So it's a shame Achim has limited his audience and used up all those shots, otherwise he could have used them later and named his next book The Pacific's Wild Beauty! John Bantin
