Putting the seal on it
“Splash In! 2014 was a resounding success!” proclaimed Beccy MacDonald, Warden of the designated Marine Conservation Zone.
The annual underwater photography competition was held on a sunny mid-June Saturday, although the number of entrants was down on last year at 17.
They began registering from 8am and were each able to submit five original images (no manipulation permitted) into any of three standard categories – “Marine Abstract”, “Mega to Macro” and “Spirit of the Marine Protected Area” – plus “Iona II”, a new category to celebrate the launch of a dive trail for the wreck.
Judging began 10 hours later, as participants got the chance to unwind with a barbecue and live music.
Judges Neil Hope and Stuart Philpott selected first, second and third-placed prize-winners for each category plus the overall winner – which was the “Spirit of the MPA” category winner Left Over Right, one of two seal pictures by Jo Crewdson to make their mark.
Prizes were donated by AP Diving, Cameras Underwater, divEr, Fourth Element, Mares, Sea & Sea, Suunto and Wessex Archaeology. Participants also received a limited-edition Iona II Dive Trail T-shirt.
All entries and winning images can be viewed on the Lundy Conservation Team Facebook page or on www.flickr.com/ groups/lundy-splash-in-2014.
The date for the 2015 event is to be released on the new Lundy Island website, www.lundyisland.co.uk
